NCAA Football: Texas Christian at West Virginia

Geno Smith

Quarterback – West Virginia

6’3″ 214lbs

Projection: Top 10

-Good arm strength; can make all the necessary throws

-Elite production at the college level

-Good accuracy on all levels of the field (short, intermediate, deep)

-Feels pressure well, knows when to escape

-Stands strong in pocket; doesn’t get scared by pass rush

-Extends plays with his feet without crossing the line of scrimmage

-Has good footwork; doesn’t throw off back foot unless facing extreme pressure

-Throws the ball well towards the sideline

-Would fit well in a West Coast offense

-Has good mobility

-Product of a system? Played in the same offense that Brandon Weeden did

-Elite supporting cast may have masked his deficiencies (Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, Noel Devine in 2010)

-Gunslinger; sometimes forces balls into double and triple coverage

-Tends to put a little too much heat on his passes, needs to convert some of those passes into touch throws

Geno Smith has been an extremely productive player for West Virginia as he totaled 11,662 passing yards to go along with 98 touchdowns compared to only 21 interceptions. While West Virginia went 7-6 on the season, he constantly had to make up for a porous defense that allowed and average of 38.1 points a game which ranked 117th in the FBS. He has a high ceiling and would benefit from being able to sit for a year behind a veteran starter. Smith has the skill set to be an above average starting quarterback that occasionally makes the Pro Bowl.

Player Comparison: Alex Smith
